General Eye Examination

Our comprehensive Eye Examination focuses on vision and general ocular health in relation to your visual history and performance. Early detection, regular monitoring and prevention of potential problems affecting ocular health and sight are crucial for preserving vision. Clinically it is recommended that our eyes are examined every two years or at least every year during our growing youth years. Our optometrist encompasses both Traditional and Behavioural optometry to determine visual refraction. Children in particular are examined with a variety of additional visual skills tests to identify/confirm issues like colour deficiency, squints, focus imbalance, stereopsis or any other evidence that may be the root cause of the child’s visual impediment to reaching his/her potential during educational development where vision plays a part. Through 43+ years experience in clinical practice, our optometrist has seen some complicated vision cases and the best reward of all is to see the developing child blossom into a happy functionally well-rounded adult. Cases range from very high astigmatism (9.00D cylinder), very high prescriptions (between +12.00D and -20.00D some with Astigmatism, successful contact lens fittings with both soft and rigid types achieving optimal vision; anisometropia occurs when a child’s two eyes are very different which usually concludes with either double vision or lazy eye/s, unsuccessful outcomes from laser surgery, post cataract, corneal graft, keratoconus, macular degeneration. Our optometrist has worked in hospital supporting Ophthalmology specialising in Corneal issues. Currently we are working with ophthalmology to help with those retinal issues that were hopeless in the past but are now able to be treated and sometimes even for free on clinical trials.
Contact Lens Examinations

Despite contact lenses having developed and evolved over past decades, they should still be treated and respected as being foreign objects on the eyes. A contact lens fits over the cornea which is on average 550 microns (or 0.5mm) thick or in reality only half a mm! In comparision, the diameter of human hair varies from 0.04mm to 0.12mm. Scarring of the cornea from infections or physical damage affects clarity of sight for life i.e. permanently; hence regular contact lens checks are advised to prevent any potential sight-threatening problems. Poorly fitted or over worn contact lenses and even poor hygiene could lead to corneal erosion, infection or worst case scenario corneal exhaustion. During the Contact Lens Examination, the health of the anterior clear portion of the eyes (=window/front/cornea of the eyes) the fitting as well as the vision with contact lenses on are assessed. During this examination the health of the eyelids and tears are also assessed; Dry Eye Disease (DED) may also be identified. Our Dry Eye or Blepharitis Clinic assessment will get to the root of the problem giving us a wide variety of management and/or treatment options.
Contact Lens Fitting

The youngest contact lens patient fitted by our Optometrist was a 2-year old fitted with special rigid contact lenses for kerataconus ( a condition where the cornea progressively thins). There are multitudes of Contact lens types available: hard and rigid gas permeable lenses, soft lenses, disposable lenses, keratoconic lenses, orthokeratology lenses, hybrid and scleral lenses. Our optometrist works with all types and brands of contact lenses but most importantly what is best for the patient’s vision and acceptance is what decides the final fitting. Custom-made bespoke contact lenses whether in single vision, astigmatism and/or multifocal form our optometrist works closely with the manufacturing laborator to fine-tune the final contact lens design and optimal lens optics for each patient/contact lens wearer. It is not just the brand that is important, it is what is best for individual eyes. Our optometrist’s aim is to achieve optimal vision, comfort and longterm eye health with contact lens wear. In order to achieve this continued research and education is required to select from different contact lens manufacturers who are continually researching and developing materials, optics and contact lens solutions to optimize for individual requirements – all these principles also apply to those patients who have their cataracts replaced by intraocular lenses.
Glaucoma Screening

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of permanent sight loss in the world; it is mostly due to increased pressure in the eye damaging the delicate optic nerve at the back of the eye. In most cases it advances unnoticed because there is no pain nor obvious symptoms nor immediate sight loss. In the smaller number of sudden or acute form, it can be painful and requires urgent treatment. Nonetheless, early detection of Glaucoma through screening is vital to sight preservation.
We use Zeiss technology, the industry leader in Glaucoma diagnostic equipment and Glaucoma analytical software.
Optic Nerve and Macular Scanning

The Zeiss high definition Optical Coherence Tomographer (OCT) is a sophisticated 3D digital instrument used to measure the layers of the retina. It is equivalent to an MRI scan of the eye and is one of the most advanced technological methods of monitoring and assessing Glaucoma, macular and other retinal phenomena. An OCT scan provides a lot of data which remains as data unless it is analysed and interpreted by an experienced eyecare practitioner. Zeiss’ unique software integrates the OCT results with the Field test results and performs trend analyses as well as compares results to a normative database which is discussed after the scan. After the consultation the wealth of data is further reviewed and analysed in detail.
Other Eye Examinations

Dilated examinations are required when the pupils are too small to confidently examine the eye. An eyedrop is used to dilate pupils to be able too see through to the back (retina) of your eye. For most children a cycloplegic examination may be advised to relax the internal eye muscles – this way the child’s vision is measured without the influence of the child’s conscious ability to control his/her focusing. The effects of these eyedrops are temporary lasting from 20 minutes to sometimes 12 hours during which time reading will be difficult and driving is prohibited.
