Dry Eye Disease assessment
The general Eye Examination focuses on vision and general ocular health in relation to your visual history. Early detection, regular monitoring and prevention of potential problems affecting ocular health and sight are crucial for preserving vision.
Both Traditional and Behavioural optometry determine visual correction.
Children in particular are examined with a variety of tests to identify/confirm various issues like colour deficiency, squints, focus imbalance, stereopsis or evidence that may be the functional root cause of the child's impediment to reaching his/her potential during educational development through visual weaknesses/impairment.
Through the 38+ years experience in clinical practice, our optometrist has seen some complicated visual cases and the best reward of all is to see the developing child blossom into a happy functionally well-rounded adult.
Contact Lens Examinations
Despite contact lenses having developed and evolved over past decades, they should still be treated and respected as being foreign objects on the eyes. A contact lens fits over the cornea which is on average 550 microns thick or in reality only half a mm! In comparision, the diameter of human hair varies from 0.04mm to 0.12mm. Scarring of the cornea from infections or physical damage affects clarity of sight for life i.e. permanently; hence regular contact lens checks are advised to prevent any potential sight-threatening problems. During the Contact Lens Examination, the health of the anterior portion of the eyes(=window/front of the eyes) the fitting as well as the vision with contact lenses on are assessed. During this examination the health of the eyelids and tears are also assessed - Dry Eye Disease (DED) may also be identified.
Contact Lens Fitting
There are multitudes of Contact lens types available: hard and rigid gas permeable lenses, soft lenses, disposable lenses, keratoconic lenses, orthokeratology lenses, hybrid and scleral lenses.
Our optometrist works with all types and brands of contact lenses and what is best for the patient is what is finally fitted.
Custom-made bespoke contact lenses whether in single vision, astigmatism and/or multifocal form our optometrist works closely with the manufacturing laboratory to fine-tune the final contact lens design and optimal lens optics for each patient/contact lens wearer.
It is not just the brand that is important, it is what is best for individual eyes. Our optometrist's aim is to achieve optimal vision, comfort and longterm eye health with contact lens wear. In order to achieve this continued research and education is required to select from different contact lens manufacturers who are continually researching and developing materials, optics and contact lens solutions to optimize for individual requirements.
Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of permanent sight loss in the world; it is mostly due to increased pressure in the eye damaging the delicate optic nerve at the back of the eye. In most cases it advances unnoticed because there is no pain nor obvious symptoms nor immediate sight loss. In the smaller number of sudden or acute form, it can be painful and requires urgent treatment. Nonetheless, early detection of Glaucoma through screening is vital to sight preservation. We continue to use Zeiss technology since 2009 the industry leader in Glaucoma testing.
Optic Nerve and Macular Scanning
The Zeiss high definition Optical Coherence Tomographer (OCT), a sophisticated 3D digital instrument is used to measure the layers of the retina. It is equivalent to an MRI scan of the eye and is one of the most advanced technological method of monitoring and assessing Glaucoma, macular and other retinal phenomena.
Other Eye Examinations
Dilated examinations are required when the pupils are too small to confidently examine the eye. An eyedrop is used to dilate pupils to be able too see through to the back (retina) of your eye. For most children a cycloplegic examination may be advised to relax the internal eye muscles - this way the child's vision is measured without the influence of the child's conscious ability to control his/her focusing. The effects of these eyedrops are temporary lasting from 20 minutes to sometimes 12 hours during which time reading will be difficult and driving is prohibited.
